The Bethel Beacon April 2016

It is officially spring, Robins have been spotted, the tulips are up by the side of the church. It stays lighter in the evenings. People are out riding motorcycles and walking. The summer holds much promise. We all feel a sense of renewal.

I have been attending the meetings of the anniversary committee. We have been looking at the past as well as looking to the future. Our anniversary kickoff will be on Sunday, April 24. Already a healing and anointing service had been scheduled. We will add to that a dinner. The BLCW will provide ham and rolls. You are asked to bring a side dish to be shared. Lutherans like to eat potluck. According to tradition, Lutheran church basement ladies like to serve red jello with bananas and topped with whipped cream. Please don't all of you bring red jello that day! The Sunday School will get out early that day so they can join us as we eat and celebrate. Pictures will be up from past celebrations. There will be conversation starters on every table. Please invite you next door neighbors, your friends to join with us. I know that we all have a favorite table to sit at during coffee. Sit at a different table that day. Introduce yourselves to someone new or to someone you know by sight, but may not know their names. Recently during a confirmation class we were talking about local government. I mentioned that the mayor was a member of Bethel. One of the girls couldn't believe that, so the next time she and the mayor were in church, I introduced them, as well as some of the other kids. They were so impressed that the mayor spoke to them, that he seemed interested in them, that he was so approachable. We are all one family. We need to get out of our comfort zones and introduce yourselves to those we know by sight , but not by name. Today is a good time to do that. The mission focus of our celebration will be to introduce our church & ourselves to the community. We have worshiped in this building for over 120 years. The neon cross on the steeple has been lighting the sky over South Superior for 76 years. We have established relationships in our area of the neighborhood for those many years.

Spring is here. It is a time of renewal. It is a time to celebrate. Celebrate the coming season with your church family. Introduce yourselves to others that you may not know. Take an interest in our youth, who are so much more than a group to assign tasks. Youth, learn someone's name and visit with someone you may not know. God has an interest in you all. God sent his son to die for you all. You are precious in God's sight. You are precious as a member of our Bethel family

Peace be with you,

Pastor Gary

Bethel Lutheran Congregation -

In preparation of our upcoming 125th year Anniversary of Bethel, we thought it would be a good time to update our pictorial directory.

In order to get it published BEFORE all the festivities start, we need to get going. Soooo . . . the photo shoots are all set up for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th with time slots from 2:00 p.m. - 8:40 p.m. And on Saturday , April 9th with time slots from 10:00 a.m. - 4:40 p.m.

Everyone that has their picture taken will receive an 8x10 photo AND the directory at no charge. Everyone will have the opportunity to purchase extra photos if you choose to BUT you are under no obligation to do so. Anyone that brings a food donation to your appointment, to be given to a food shelf of our choice, will receive $5.00 off any purchased photos.

My hope is to have the most complete as possible directory that we have ever had of our church family. So please don't ignore my phone call or run the other way when you are asked to sign up to get your picture taken!! I promise it will not hurt or cost you anything, unless you want it to. I will be in church every Sunday to get you signed up, the earlier you sign up the better choice of time slots you will have.

Thank you so much in advance, with Gods guidance and you saying cheese, it will be a great book.

Pam Schultz

Dear Friends from Bethel Lutheran Church

Thank You very much for your generous donation of approximately 375 pounds of food to The Salvation Army.

We deeply appreciate the generosity of friends like you who are willing to assist The Salvation Army in helping others in Superior and Douglas County. Your gift helps The Salvation Army provide for the needs of many less fortunate individuals and families in our community.

May God richly bless you.

Sincerely yours,

David Clark, Major

Remember to keep the family of Vannesa Lynn Allen who passed away on March 20th. Her funeral was here at Bethel on March 25th. Blessed be her memory.

April Mission

Our April mission will be to collect things for the Harbor House which is right across the alley from the church. Items needed are pillows, gently used sheets & blankets, cleaning supplies, paper products (paper towels, toilet paper). Put them in the tub in the narthex & they will be delivered.

Bible Study

The Bible study group will meet on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00. We will be reading Acts 24 & discussing it. Please join the group as we discuss the text and see how it relates to our everyday life.

April Quarters

Quarters put into the offering plates in April go to the Douglas County Historical Society for their ongoing exhibits. Please be generous with your quarters.

Administrative Professional Day

Wednesday, April 27 is National Administrative Professional Day, a day to honor & thank administrative professionals. Bethel recognizes the work & dedication of our office secretary, Judy Hagen. Judy knows the church very well, having been our office secretary since November of 2000. She keeps the office running smoothly, sends out notice of meetings, prepares our bulletins & newsletters. Her cheerful voice is the first one that you hear when you call the office, her smile is the first that you see when you stop into the office. Stop by the office this month to thank her for her service and to let her know that you truly appreciate her work. And PLEASE remember that Sunday is her worship day and is NOT a day to give her stuff for bulletins or newsletters or to discuss office business. THANK YOU, JUDY!

Anointing Service

Bethel's next anointing service will be on Sunday, April 24 at our 9:00 worship service. This service will focus on Jesus, our true healer. As we come to the baptismal font to be blessed and anointed, we will entrust ourselves to God's care, knowing that all healing comes in many forms other than what we expect or hope. Golden olive oil scented with frankincense and myrrh will be used for the anointing. Two stations, one at the front of the church and one at the rear of the sanctuary will be used. Before the service, please read the 23rd Psalm, especially the 5th verse, THOU ANNOINTEST MY HEAD WITH OIL, MY CUP OVERFLOWS.

125th Anniversary Committee

Bethel is celebrating our 125th anniversary year all year long. We start with our kickoff dinner on April 24. Announcements will be made of ongoing events.
