The Bethel Beacon August 2014

_________________________________________________________________

Greetings!

In one of the readings for our Wednesday evening service, the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah quotes God who tells him,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the

nations.” What wonderful words of God's care for Jeremiah & what wonderful care God has for us! Just think that before

you were born, God knew you. God had set you apart for service to him for a specific job even before you were born. God

cares for you, has cared for you even before you were born. What has God created you to do? Give it some thought this

month.

What does it mean that God knew you before you were born? Have you heard all the excuses that men of the Bible have

tried to use so they could get out of service to God? Abraham did not want to sacrifice his only son, but God had

commanded, so he would do it. But God provided a lamb in Isaac's place. Moses stuttered & could not speak plainly, & God

provided his brother Aaron to speak for him. Even though the boy Samuel lived in the temple, he did not know God & the

priest Eli told Samuel how to answer God's voice. Jeremiah was very young when he was called to speak for God to the

people so much younger than many of the wise men of his day, but God told him that his actual call had been so much

earlier. Daniel's call was to be faithful to God as he lived in a foreign land, which got him into trouble with the earthly

powers of the King. Zechariah did not believe the angel of God who told him that he would have a child in his old age & was

not able, then, to speak until the child was born. Paul was a man who hunted early Christians when the Lord made him blind

to get his attention, & Paul became one of the greatest preachers of the New Testament era. They all had things to

overcome before they started God's work. They made excuses, but God overcame then & all did God's work. Your call & my

call to serve the Lord may not be as dramatic, but still we are called to tell God's story. Which excuse have you used? How

has God overcome that excuse? Continue in prayer to God. He does not ask for great things, but only that you are faithful.

He knows & even before you were born, knew your abilities. Answering his call is not a one time event, but a daily calling to

serve God. There is no such thing as a retirement in the service of God.

Each morning & each Evening & many times in between, God calls us. Listen for his call for your life. Answer it with prayer

and with the response, “Here I am, send me!”

Yours in Christ, Pastor Gary

Thank You!

 Dear  Gary Garnatz,

Thank you for taking the time to coordinate the Superior Bethel Lutheran Church Blood Drive

that took place on June  23, 2014 2:00 pm. Hosting a blood drive is an excellent way to support

the community. In fact, as many as three lives are saved with each unit of blood collected.

At Memorial Blood Centers, we want to make sure our blood drives offer the best experience

possible for everyone involved—starting with you!

Thank you! Your participation is greatly appreciated and I look forward to

working with you on future blood drives.                            Sincerely,    Katie Foley

August Quarters

Quarters put into the offering plates in the month of August will go to paying for our Sunday School materials and supplies.

Please be generous with your quarters so that our Sunday School will be well equipped.

Bible Study

August Bible study will meet on Tuesday, August 5 at 6:00. We will be reading and discussing Acts 9: 1-31. This section of

Acts deals with the conversion of Paul . . . his call, his baptism, and his preaching. Read these verses, study them, and

gather with us in the dining room as we discuss how Paul's ministry affects us and our world today.

Summer Midweek Worship

Wednesday, August 6 will be our last midweek service for the summer. This will be a communion service. We meet at 5:00

for potluck meal and have worship in the dining room at 6:00. Join us for this last informal service as we sing, pray, and hear

God's call to seven people of the Bible.

Vacation Coverage

Thank you to the deacons (Joyce Klick, Sue Connolly and Theresa Lull) who have arranged for worship the two Sunday in

July that Pastor was on vacation. One Sunday the ladies lead worship, one the deacons lead worship. The Wednesday

evening services were also lead by the deacons. Thank you to all who helped lead worship the last two weeks in July.

Sympathies

Susan Walker's graveside service at Sawyer, Minnesota was on June 20th.

Edward Nikstad's memorial service at Pine View in Carlton, Minnesota was on July 17th.

Blessed be their memories.

August Mission

As school supplies go on sale this month, we will collect items for the teacher's closet at Bryant School. Most needed by the

teachers to have on hand for their classrooms are: Paper plates; napkins; Expo markers; scissors (various sizes)' Regular

markers; boxes of tissues; 1” three ring binders; pocket folders. Each school puts out lists of needed supplies for the

students. Occasionally student forget their supplies or simply don't have supplies. We help stock the teacher's closet so they

may take supplies for their students who have none or for their classrooms. Please be generous as you shop for supplies.

Items will be taken to Bryant before classes begin.

Congratulations!

Krista Mattson and Erick DeGraef were married here at Bethel on June 21st, 2014.

Church Picnic

Our annual church picnic will be on August 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Pattison Park. Bring lawn chairs as we will worship outside.

Communion by intinction will be served. Potluck picnic following service. Paper plates, plastic silverware, napkins and

beverages will be provided. When you enter the park that day, stop at the registration building & tell them that you are with

the Bethel group & you will receive a day pass. After lunch, use the park. Use the hiking trails, the swimming area, sit under

the trees to visit. Please do not bring pets to the park.

* Special Note * We will not be using the shelter house this year. Our worship service and picnic will be on the lawn nearer

the volley ball courts. Look for a group of tables & hopefully a small tent. We will have no electricity. The Ensemble will lead

the hymns.

Lawn Mowing

Thank you to those who have mowed lawn these past few weeks; The Newman Family, Adam Kuhlman, Roger Breitzmann,

Gary Blaisdell and again The Newman Family. There are still openings that can be signed up for. If you have any questions

talk to Pastor or one of the Trustees (Shelby Holen, Adam Kuhlman or Byron Selbrede). Thanks again to those who have

mowed and signed up to mow!

Help! Help! Help!

Bethel is in need of Help!!! Our offerings have been low. We know people are out enjoying our very short summer season . ,

. but . . . our bills here at church do not take a vacation. Pastor has been asked several times not to cash his check again.

Also have not mailed out a few bills that were do until the next weeks offering so there was money to cover them. If you can

help out in any way it would be greatly appreciated.
