The Bethel Beacon July 2014

_________________________________________________________________

Greetings!

It's the summer of anniversaries. On June 1, Faith & I traveled to South Dakota to celebrate with the members of Hudson

Lutheran Church their 125th anniversary. Their first building was a wood frame building that soon became too small. During

the depression, when there was so little work to be had, the men of the community decided to build a bigger church of

granite from the Sioux Valley. Each family was to donate a wagon of red granite from the quarry . . . cost was $1.00 per

wagon load. June 1 was a day of celebration, of seeing so many faces & visiting with so many from Hudson.

This month Holden Lutheran at Colfax is celebrating their 150th anniversary. It will also be the town's 150th anniversary

with events scheduled throughout a long weekend. Holden's building was built for about $1,250 beginning in 1876. Each

family head of that congregation was to deliver two loads of stone from a local quarry (about six miles away) to the building

site. Two men of the congregation were killed in 1876 as they began to quarry the stone. The church was built over the

summer of 1876 by the men of the congregation. Additions have been made over the years. We look forward to going to this

celebration as well . . . for the church & for the community.

Bethel's anniversary date is October 24, 1891. We will not be having a celebration this year. Usually churches don't

celebrate 123 year anniversaries. Take time this summer to look back at our history although we didn't build a building (we

bought our building from the First Baptist Church in 1898). The church was built on wood pilings, and in 1921 a basement

was dug, foundation poured and basement finished. In January of 1907 our ancestors changed the name of the First

Norwegian Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Superior to Bethel Lutheran Church. Throughout the years, there

have been many changes & additions to our church. In two years we will celebrate our 125th anniversary. We have seen

changes to our building and also changes to our worship style. We still meet weekly to pray, sing praises, and hear God's

word. We join over 9,500 Lutheran congregations in the ELCA to worship & pray . . . just in this nation. We have not had to

build a church building, but in our early years our worship cite shifted many times. Our ministry has been strong throughout

the years. Where will the next 125 years lead us? How will ministry change in these next years? What will the worship &

focus for ministry be in 2030? Think about it. How will we get there? Pray about it as together we proclaim the word of God

in Superior.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Gary

meat with crackers, bars & cakes. These are just suggestions. You decide what will work for you. Clean up includes wiping

Bethl's music committee will meet on Wednesday, July 9 during Soul Food. We will look at lessons & themes for each Sunday

made on the sale. Relay for Life held a cookie sale by the front doors & they made $251.50 for the American Cancer Society

at their sale. Will we have a sale next year? Volunteers are needed to plan & head up a team if we are to have one next

year. Thank you to Cathy & Bobbie who headed up our last ones, but they need a break & we are looking for someone to

organize next year's sale if we are to have one. Any volunteers???? Let Pastor know!

Don't Forget !!!!!

We know summer is a busy time for everyone. And it is a very short season. But please remember your offerings here at

church. If you can't make it to church either on Sunday's or Wednesday's send your offering in. Or maybe stop in for a visit

when you have a few minutes to spare. Also Sunday School students remember your offerings as well. The money collected

from Sunday school envelopes goes towards buying the materials they use in Sunday School, supplies for crafts and Luis the

sponsor child.

Thanks to everyone for helping Bethel stay out of the red this summer. Have a Safe and Enjoyable Summer!
